“Senior” General Than Shwe, the head of Burma's military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) will make a state visit to India later October, the first by a Burmese leader to the South Asian giant in 24 years.
He will meet Indian leaders during the October 24-29 visit and bilateral issues would be discussed. The general's visit is the strongest evidence yet of warming relations between the two countries.
But, critics including Burmese opposition leaders said the visit could achieve nothing more than diplomatic “goodwill” between the two countries.
New Delhi-based Dr. Tint Swe, the elected representative (MP) of Pale Township told DVB that there could be no significant shift of foreign policy on the Indian side, but he admitted that the approach on the matter would be changed radically as the two nations are keen to improve economic ties and relationship between them.
