Indian Foreign Minister Natwar Singh is scheduled to leave on a four-day trip to Burma starting 23 March for talks aimed at further consolidating ties between the two neighbours, according to a report by AFP.

Foreign ministry officials said Singh will hold talks with Burma's junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) chairman Gen Than Shwe, “Prime Minister” Soe Win and his counterpart U Nyan Win to “reaffirm India's readiness to assist” the government and people of Burma on their path to further political and economic progress.

India once vocally backed Burma’s democracy leader and Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi but under its "Look East" policy has been wooing Burma's military leadership and promoting trade and investment.
