Myanmar navy chief in India

April 1, 2007: New Delhi, Continuing with the high-level military engagement with Myanmar as part of the policy to counter strategic inroads being made into that country by China and Pakistan, India is all set to welcome the Myanmarese navy chief.

Vice-Admiral Soe Thane, heading a seven-member delegation, will be visiting India from April 1 to April 5. He will be meeting defence minister A K Antony, Navy chief Admiral Sureesh Prakash, Army chief General J J Singh and defence secretary Shekhar Dutt.

He will also visit military establishments in Goa and Mumbai. External affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee as well as the three Service chiefs have visited Myanmar fto bolster bilateral ties.

India has accepted Myanmar's request for military hardware and software in return for the military junta's cooperation in flushing out Indian insurgent groups operating from its soil.
