Gambari to discuss Burma with Indian Foreign Secretary
July 11, 2007: (Mizzima) The UN Secretary General's special advisor on Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, will meet Indian Foreign Secretary, Shivshankar Menon to discuss the political situation in Burma during his whistle stop tour of New Delhi.
The UN envoy is scheduled to meet Menon on Thursday, an Indian Ministry of External Affairs official told Mizzima. But the official did not give details of the meeting.
The Nigerian diplomat, who arrived New Delhi on Tuesday as part of a region wide effort to usher in positive changes in Burma, will fly to Tokyo on Thursday evening, the official said.
While details of his scheduled meetings and discussions remain undisclosed, Farhan Haq, a UN spokesperson in New York told Mizzima, Gambari's trip is largely to discuss with regional countries that have influence on the Burmese military junta on the possibilities of bringing changes in the country.
"The idea is to consult all the relevant countries about Myanmar [ Burma]," Haq said.
Earlier on Monday, Gambari met Chinese foreign ministry officials in Beijing and was reported to have discussed the political situation in Burma and the prospects of changes.
However, according to a Reuters report, Chinese officials after talks with the UN envoy said while it wishes to see Burma stable, economically developed and have ethnic harmony, but "Myanmar's [ Burma's] issues should be solved by the Myanmar [Burmese] people themselves."
So far the Indian Ministry of External Affairs has not made any statement on the visit of the UN representative.
