India : MoU signed to boost bilateral ties with Myanmar
March 6, 2007: Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by three associations -Industries and Trade Fair Association of Assam, the Indo-Myanmar Border Traders’ Union of Manipur and the Union of Myanmar Border Trade Chamber of Commerce, Myanmar - is expected to enhance trade relations between northeastern states and Myanmar.
These trade associations will work in tandem and encourage business participation.
They will also exchange views on border trade in meeting that is expected to be conducted at Moreh within three months.
Governments of both countries are planning to achieve $1 billion trade in 2006-07. In 2005-06, bilateral trade between these countries stood at $570 million.
An integrated checkpoint at Moreh will be created by the Government that will manage trade cargo and passenger movement.
Government is expected to spend INR70 crore for developing this integrated checkpoint.
It will also benefit population residing in border towns and enhance regional trade.
Moreh project, which will be carried out by RITES, is expected to be completed next year.
