Myanmar keen on tea technology import

March 2, 2007: GUWAHATI, Encouraged by growing tea business in the North East, Myanmar is keen on importing tea technology from the region.

Thung Kyaw, deputy director of Border Trade, Myanmar, while exchanging his views with the traders of North East here today, said that since tea is famous in the region, Myanmar wants to import technology to boost high yield. “ We are also planning to work together with the North East in the field of medicinal plants”, he said.

A 31-member business delegation of Myanmar arrived in Guwahati today on a three-day visit to the State. The delegation comprising senior officials and heads of the companies will visit tea gardens, textile units and herbal medicinal plant gardens and fisheries.

Kyaw also laid stress on boosting the bilateral trade between North East and Myanmar. In this context , he said the present volume of trade should be increased by way of involving the traders of Myanmar and North East India.

The interaction which was attended by the officials of the banks, trade bodies and the State Government took up different subjects ranging from border trade to economic issues.

The Indo-Myanmar trade pact was signed in 1994 and it was made operational in 1995. since then the volume of trade has not been encouraging. To give a boost the ongoing border trade, Myanmar Government has sent the delegation.

A delegation of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) and Asom Unnati Sabha also met the members and urged them to reopen the famous StilWell Road. A trilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU) was initiated by the Industries Trade Fair Association of Assam and Indo-Myanmar Border Traders’ Union of Myanmar.
