India keen on strong ties with Myanmar: Army chief
October 2, 2007: (NDTV News) In the face of growing international condemnation of the military's crackdown in Myanmar, India's new army chief Deepak Kapoor has said that India would like to maintain a strong relationship with Myanmar.
He made the statement in the
context of cooperation between India and Myanmar in tackling militancy in the
northeast.
Thus far, India has been a silent spectator to the crisis in Myanmar, urging
both sides to re-engage in the dialogue for national reconciliation.
But ASEAN, the UK and Australia among others have all urged both India and
China to intervene in favour of the protestors more aggressively.
