Indian urges political reform in Burma
October 3, 2007: (BBC Burmese News) India has called upon the Burmese authorities to hasten political reform. The Indian foreign minister, Pranab Mukherjee, expressed concern over the recent violence there during talks with his Burmese counterpart, U Nyan Win, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
A statement from the Indian foreign ministry urged the Burmese military government to consider launching an investigation into the use of force on pro-democracy campaigners.
In another development, the New York-based campaign group, Human Rights Watch, urged Chinese and Indian companies operating in Burma to ensure that they did not not contribute to, or benefit from, human rights abuses there.
