by indoadmin last modified 2008-11-12 10:58

February 10, 2008: (PTI) New Delhi, Goaded by the UN to play a more active role on Myanmar, India has impressed upon the military leadership of the neighbouring country to expedite the process of political reconciliation and transition to broad-based democracy.

The Indian view was conveyed by Foreign Secretary Shivshankar Menon during his meetings with Myanmarese leaders, including Deputy Foreign Minister Kyaw Thu, in Yangon over the last two days.

India pressed Myanmar's military regime to hold talks with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi to broad-base the reconciliation process and speed up steps towards democracy, sources said.

Menon, who concluded his visit on Sunday, is also understood to have pressed the Myanmarese leadership to allow UN Special Envoy Ibrahim Gambari to pay an early visit to Yangon.

Menon was in Myanmar less than two weeks after Gambari's visit here, when he urged India to play a more active role and facilitate his early visit to Yangon.
