India: Operation at Myanmar border over

by indoadmin last modified 2008-07-02 15:38

January 23, 2008: (UPI) New Delhi, The Indian army said it has busted all militant camps in the Samtal Saliant region along the Indo-Myanmar border.

"The Army has completed its operations aimed at clearing the Samtal Salient region, a 1,000-square-kilometer area on the Indo-Burma border in Manipur, of camps set up by militants of the outlawed United National Liberation Front group," a Defense Ministry spokesman said.

He said the final assault was conducted Jan. 10. The operation was crucial because UNLF had long declared Samtal Salient as a liberated zone, the spokesman said.

The area is the southeastern tip of Manipur state, along the porous Indo-Myanmarese border. The army said villagers fled the area several months ago, as UNLF had extensively mined the area.
