Burmese soldier with weapon arrested in Mizoram
May 19, 2008: (Mizzima) New Delhi: A Burmese Army private was arrested carrying his weapon in Lung Lei Township, Mizoram State, India by local authorities on May 13 morning.
The private Ko Saw Saw (Ta-321043
s/o U Saw Htu Ke) aged 19 from the Sagaing Division, Kalay Myo based IB 264,
'D' Company was arrested with his weapon, a MA – 1 and 120 rounds of live
ammunition by the Laime Youth Association (YLA) in Bualpui village, Lung Lei
Township, Mizoram State on May 13 at about 6 a.m.
"He fled to the Indian border town as he was unhappy in the Burmese Army
after being conscripted forcibly. At an opportune moment he fled to India," a
local Burmese resident told Mizzima.
Ko Saw Saw deserted when he was on duty in Sokhwa village in Chin State
on the Indo-Burma border on May 12 and was detained next morning in Bualpui
village, in India.
"He is under investigation," Long Lei police Officer S. Dawngkhuma
said.
He is a resident of Sanchaung Township, Rangoon Division in Burma and has been now been charged in India under the
Foreigners Act and Arms Act, a local police source said. He is currently in
judicial custody in Long Lei prison and is to appear in court on May 27.
