India to send 50 medical personnel to Myanmar

by indoadmin last modified 2008-11-12 10:58

May 16, 2008: (IANS) New Delhi: India will be sending 50 medical personnel, including paramedics, to cyclone-hit Myanmar, news reports said Thursday.

"We are sending 50 medical personnel along with integral equipment, which means they will be self-sufficient in giving treatment," an Indian Defence Ministry official was quoted as saying by IANS news agency.

The personnel will be divided into two groups of 25 members each and will fly to Yangon in an Indian Air Force aircraft on Saturday along with consignments of medicines.

"The consignments contain 5-6 tonnes of medical aid, and each consignment can cater for 1,000 people," the official said.

An estimated 2 million people were affected by Cyclone Nargis that smashed into the central coastal region of Myanmar on May 2-3.

Myanmar, which has been cautious about receiving international aid, has sought medical help from India, the official said.
