Myanmar ready for free trade with India
September 6, 2008: Imphal, The visiting high level Myanmar delegation is ready for “free trade” through India’s gateway to South Asian countries but the traders of the host State here are yet to react to the proposal.

This was observed during a day long ground level
officials meet for promotion of Indo-Myanmar Border Trade on the occasion of
visit of a 17-member trade delegation from Myanmar at the state guest house
here. The meet was organized under the aegis of Manipur Directorate of Commerce
and Industries and National Identity Protection Committee.
The delegation led by U Aung Kyaw Moe, Deputy Director, Myanmar Border Trade and U Hla Maung, president, Border Trade Chamber of Commerce, Myanmar was here since Wednesday on a four day trip to explore the trade related activities in this border state.
Earlier, the Manipur Commerce and Industries Minister Yumkham Erabot inaugurating the officials meet expressed the need to improve the ongoing Indo-Myanmar border trade through the border town Moreh. The border trade both on ‘barter and normal’ has been going on since April 12, 1995. U Aye Ko, Secretary Tamu-Kale-Kalewa, Border Trade Chamber of Commerce expressed the willingness to organize annual trade fair on both sides of the two countries apart from promoting tourism across the border under certain tour operators.
Ch Ranjit, general secretary of Indo-Myanmar Exim Association suggested the Myanmar delegation can invite Indian companies for exploration of oil and natural gas resources and other joint ventures in their country.
