The committee, headed by Mr Brahm Dutt, Secretary, Road Transport & Highways, cleared the proposal for the highway from Lawngtalai in Mizoram to the Myanmar border at its meeting here yesterday. The estimated cost of the highway is Rs 650 crore.
An official press release said the highway would provide linkage to the proposed port facilities at Sittwe in Myanmar. The port facilities in the Bay of Bengal at Sittwe would provide a water route to the whole of the North-East through the state of Mizoram, it said.
The port facilities, along with the highway, would greatly enhance the competitiveness of the North-East region by reducing costs of transportation, the release added.
