"We were about to search the boat when it sped off at high speed. Their boat engine was so good we could not catch up with them. Our soldiers fired at them but they did not stop," said a BDR officer on condition of anonymity.

Burmese smugglers operating on a boat killed a member of the Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) on Tuesday, a day after he was kidnapped.

Mohammad Jafor Ullah (52) a private in the Teknaf based 23 Rifles Battalion was abducted by the smugglers when a BDR patrol team challenged the gang and was about to board the boat. The boat sped away with the kidnapped BDR member. A gun fight ensued between the BDR and the smugglers. They killed Jafor Ullah later. They were smuggling goods to Burma along Saint Martin's on December 4.

"We were about to search the boat when it sped off at high speed. Their boat engine was so good we could not catch up with them. Our soldiers fired at them but they did not stop," said a BDR officer on condition of anonymity.

Bangladesh has officially requested the Burmese military junta to hand over the culprits, an intelligence officer from Teknaf said.

Than Aye, an eyewitness said that the Burmese authorities handed over the body of the slain BDR soldier after the Burmese border security force the Nasaka 7 had retrieved the body from Naf River.
