Two militants were killed and three including a Major of the Burmese Army were injured in a gun battle between Manipur militants and Burmese soldiers in the northern region of Chin state in Burma.

The clash between members of the Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF) and Burmese soldiers broke out on 24 August at 6 a.m. near Phaisat village in Ci Kha town in Chin state, sources said.

Three Burmese soldiers were injured and the Manipur militants snatched two guns from them.

Though, the reasons behind the gunfight could not be ascertained but it was allegedly provoked by Burmese soldiers. The Burmese soldiers and Manipur militants have had a reciprocal agreement not to disturb each other for years.

According to sources, there were around 10 Burmese soldiers and 40 Manipur militants involved in the gun battle.

“Now, there is no movement of local people in the region, where the clash occurred as the Army has imposed curfew”, said a villager who came to the Indo–Burma border area.

Because of the clash, Burmese soldiers forcibly got villagers from Suangzang, Khuadam, Kansau and Suanghoih and Phaisat village to work as porters for carrying army rations and ammunition. The villagers have to manage their own food.

The Manipur People’s Liberation Front is an umbrella group comprised of various anti-Manipur Government armed groups.
