The newly emerged island on the Naff River which has created tension between Burmese and Bangladeshi border authorities has led Lieutenant Colonel Thein Htay, Commander of Military Operation Technical Bureau based in Buthidaung, and Nasaka acting commander, Major Thu Raing Zaw, to visit Nasaka Area 4 headquarters yesterday. Area 4 is near the new island. And the controversy started after Nasaka hoisted the Burmese flag on it.

A source close to Nasaka said Lt. Colonel Thein Htay and Nasaka Commander Major Thu Raing Zaw reportedly came to the area after news began circulating that Bangladesh border security forces approached the controversial island by boat yesterday morning.

However, there have been neither details nor confirmation of whether a Bangladesh Rifles team actually approached the island.

During the period in which the rumour spread in the area, Nasaka forces from Nasaka Area 4 were put on standby.  Later, local Nasaka authorities informed higher army authorities of the rumour.

The team of army officials led by Lt Col Thein Htay came to the area to conduct an inquiry and inspect the latest situation regarding the new island after receiving the message from Nasaka Area 4.

The team left Nasaka Area 4 headquarters in the evening yesterday, but there is no information regarding the meeting that was held there.

According to local sources, BDR and Nasaka forces are both on standby along the border after the Burmese authorities hoisted their national flag on the island which has emerged in the Naff River in recent months.

A source said that Bangladeshi authorities sent a letter of protest to the authorities of Nasaka regarding the hoisting of the flag on the island.  BDR demanded the removal of the flag from the island within a month and requested that the border dispute be solved in a meeting between officials from the respective countries.

The Naff River serves as a boundary between Burma and Bangladesh but exact demarcation is difficult.  Border demarcation disputes between the two countries are not uncommon.
