MOREH: Indian Ambassador to Myanmar Bhaskar Mitra today visited Moreh along with Brigadier RA Lewis of the 26 Sector Assam Rifles and CO of 24 AR Col Vikas Saini to get a first hand account of the situation at the border town.

The Ambassador accompanied by the two Assam Rifles officers visited Gate No 1 and Gate No 2 at Moreh and studied the situation.

After the inspection, the Ambassador met community leaders, student leaders, Govt employees, meira paibis and others at the 24 AR Hqs where the Moreh ADC was also present. UBI General Manager urged the Ambassador to introduce a system to do away with the bar- ter system between Myanmar and India.

Public leaders also aired their opinion and desired that the tax imposed by Myanmar on Indians visiting Tamu be scrapped. They also opined that it would benefit both countries if more items are added to the 22 items listed for free trade.

Later talking to newsmen, Mitra said that this was his first visit to Moreh and added he was yet to visit other States which share the border with Myanmar.

On being asked whether his visit had anything to do with looking at the boundary dispute or to take up any steps to flush out militants from the border areas, Mitra said that his visit was to merely familiarise himself with Moreh town.
