Taking stern steps to prevent the spread of bird flu in the state the Mizoram government has barred entry of animals from Burma since yesterday.
The sub-divisional magistrate of the capital, Aizawl clamped Section 144 Cr. PC blocking the entry of fowl, eggs, birds and pigs from Burma. An official notice was put out to this effect yesterday, reports Vanglaini, a Mizoram daily.
A chicken vendor in Aizawl said, "Buyers decreased before the government issued the order. The price of chicken has not come down but buyers will decrease."
The blockage will affect Burma and neighbouring states of India for a two-month period.
Chicken traders in Mizoram feel that the entry of animals from other states and Burma will continue even though the government issued the order. There was a bird flu alert earlier but the entry of animals was not affected.
Burma is the main supplier of fowls and pigs. A trader in Lawngtlai told Khonumthung, "The entry of animal comes down due to the hot weather. The entry will be on the lower side till May."
The effect of the blockage is minimal because most of the animals that have been imported have already been delivered to Mizoram for the season. Entry of animal from Burma has been blocked as there is a bird flu alert in North East India since the end of February.
