New Delhi: US President George W. Bush Thursday called for the release of Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Addressing reporters after talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Bush said the US and India condemned "the deplorable state of human rights in Burma and (want) all nations to seek the release of Aung San Suu Kyi".
Aung San Suu Kyi has been under houes arrest for years after Myanmar's military junta negated the results of an election that was swept by her party.
After backing the pro-democracy movement in Myanmar for a long time, New Delhi has opted to engage with the junta in view of its security interests related to its northeastern states and to counter growing Chinese influence in Yangon.
