NESO to focus on peace and development

Agartala: The Northeast Students Organization (NESO), conglomeration body of student community in the region will focus on restoration of peace and development activities in its 4th general meeting.

The general meeting, which began here on Monday, will also address the prevailing education system in the Northeastern region.

Several participants will discuss the merits and demerits of the Look East policy and its impact on the people of the North East in the conference, said N.S.N Lotha, general secretary of NESO on Monday night. He said the issue of construction of tri-nation gas pipeline that will originate from Myanmar and pass through Mizoram and Tripura would also come up for discussion.

Terming the insurgency is the main problem in the region, Lotha said the NESO is working on a longtime strategy to bring peace to usher in development in the country´s most back region. He said a delegation of NESO had a detailed meeting with Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil recently to restore normalcy in the region.

Twipra Students Federation (TSF) is hosting the conference.

TSF president Upendra Debbarma said the have also arranged a gala of cultural programmes in honour of visiting NESO delegates.

The NESO leaders will also visit the Indo-Bangla border during the their stay in the state.

All the seven organization of NESO, the All Assam Student Union (AASU), Naga Students Federation (NSF), All Manipur Students Union (AMSU), Khasi Students Union (KSU), All Arunachal Pradesh Students Union (AAPSU), Garo Students Union (GSU) and Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) participated in the conference.
