NESO to pressurise Centre for NE devt

IMPHAL: In its 4th general conference held at Agartala, North East Students’ Organisation (NE- SO) has unanimously decided put pressure on the Centre for taking up necessary measures for overall development in the North Eastern region with special emphasis on education sector.

The four-day long session beginning from Octo- ber 30 was attended by student representatives of the seven North Eastern States namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Megha-laya, Nagaland, Mizoram and host Tripura besides 14 resource persons and guests, informed former AMSU president Sinam Prakash while addressing a press conference at AMSU Headquarters here this evening.

Six representatives of AMSU including himself and two resource persons namely Dr Lokendra Aram-bam and Prof Ch Priyoran- jan participated in the conference from Manipur, Prakash said.

Prakash recalled that in the business session, the general council meeting of NESO unanimously decid-ed to pressurise the Centre for setting up more advan-ced technical and profess- ional colleges in the region so that a large number of students, who are compelled to go outside the region to study, may remain within the region and save economic drain.

The meeting resolved that human resource centre and well-equipped district libraries should be set up in every districts of the region, Prakash informed.

On the public demand for repealing of all draconian laws including AFSPA being imposed in the region, the meeting resolved to show solidarity to Irom Chanu Sharmila in her ongoing struggle.

Endorsing that the region is economically depri- ved, the meeting also resolved for declaring NE as special economic zone so that special economic packages would be delivered.

Besides demanding setting up administrative offices in the region itself, the meeting resolved that Inner Line Permit should be implemented in the entire region to check influx of migrants and that the Govt should prepared a register on its based on 1951 record.

The general council meeting also decided that the insurgency problem besetting the region should be resolved peacefully so as to declare the region as violence free zone.

Maintaining that mineral resources found in the region should be processed in the respective States, the meeting also demanded a special constitutional status for the region.

Prakash further inform-ed that the meeting also unanimously decided to extend the term of NESO’s office bearers for three mo-nths. Hence it fixed January 12 next year for holding the election for appointment of new office bearers to be hosted by Khasi Students’ Union at Shillong.
